Therefore be patient, brethren, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, waiting patiently for it until it receives the early and latter rain. You also be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand.
You may have heard the story about the impatient person who prayed to the Lord, "God, I confess that I lack patience. Please give me patience….right now!"
The need for patience is a theme that runs throughout scripture. We know that God is patient with us; we are told to wait patiently upon the Lord, and here in this verse, we learn something significant about what patience is all about.
As believers, we all long for the return of Jesus. And as believers, we yearn for Jesus to respond quickly to our prayerful requests, our desires for justice, and solutions for the trials that threaten to consume us.
We see the patience of the farmer who must wait to receive precious fruit that he trusts will come. Waiting patiently for the rain from heaven, the farmer tends to his crop. Weeds are removed from the surrounding ground and his plants and trees are attentatively cared for everyday.
Though the farmer must wait, he is also busy doing his part to be ready for the harvest.
Today, brothers and sisters, may we establish our hearts as we wait upon the Lord, just as the farmer does by doing everything he can to establish his crop. Waiting patiently, but never idly, for the coming of the Lord.
