James 5:12

But above all, my brethren, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or with any other oath. But let your "Yes," be "Yes," and your "No," "No," lest you fall into judgment.
James 5:12

In this verse, there is an exhortation to simplicity of speech. Respond to circumstances with a simple "yes" or "no." When it comes to the tough circumstances in life we are wise to avoid long explanations, detailed excuses, and especially pious spiritualizing. James says, "Tell the truth!" To swear or to take an oath brings God into our circumstances and presents Him and His Name as validity to our commitments.

There was a day in our western culture when we were known as a people that were true to our word; we were truth tellers. Now we commit perjury in the courts and marriage vows are a mere suggestion. Can you imagine these kinds of vows? "I hope to do my best to love you, and I’m planning at least to make you the only one in my life, I'll try real hard to support you and when we have kids, I can't really promise that I'll stay to help you raise them but right now it looks pretty positive."

Let your "Yes" be "Yes,"
