Matthew 5:13

You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men.
Matthew 5:13

In Jesus' day, salt was a preservative. It was common to use salt to keep meat from rotting. In the South, you can still find salted hams hanging in the front window of the local deli. But over time, the salt would become unstable and lose the ability to preserve meat. When that happened, it would be thrown out on the walkway. When the rain fell, the salt would dissolve into the ground and kill all of the vegetation, making for a very nice place to walk.

As we live holy lives for Jesus, we become the preservative of the earth. For example, once people know you are a Christian, they will usually watch how they speak when you're around. In this verse, Jesus warns us that if we live worldly lives, we will lose our power to witness.

So unless the church is walking worthy of our King, the world will walk all over the church.
