Daniel 1:8

But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king's delicacies, nor with the wine which he drank; therefore he requested of the chief of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.
Daniel 1:8

As a teenage boy, stripped of his outward identity, removed from his homeland, and selected to serve a king who had no problem ordering executions for those who didn't comply, Daniel would not compromise who he really was. Daniel, being a Jew, had certain dietary restrictions and laws regarding proper food preparation that the Babylonians clearly didn't share. But even though the king's goal was to strip Daniel of his identity and mold him into what he wanted, Daniel still had a choice. He had a choice to be separate and to not compromise the convictions of his heart. He was willing to forsake a very tempting situation, one that he could have very easily justified.

There are plenty of times where we are in situations in which we have to decide whether we want to compromise to blend in, even if it's just a little, or stand out and be separate. As Christians, it is our purpose in life to stand out, to shine as lights, and to be different than the world so that they may know we belong to Jesus. Compromise will always lead to compromise further, which leads to your light becoming so dimmed it's hardly visible. On the other hand, honoring God with biblical convictions will always make your light so shine, that men will see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven (Matthew 5:16).

You always have a choice…
