2 Samuel 9:1

Now David said, "Is there still anyone who is left of the house of Saul, that I may show him kindness for Jonathan's sake?"
2 Samuel 9:1

Notice that here in this verse, it was David who had it in his heart to actively go out and search for any descendants of Saul that might still be alive, so that he might "show kindness to them" for Jonathan's sake. The typical practice in those days was for a king to go out seeking those who were related to the one who ruled before them, not to show kindness to them, but to get rid of them and end any plans they might have to take back the throne. But that was not in David's heart. He had given his word to Jonathan that, as King, he would not cut off his kindness to his descendants.

In this we see God's heart toward man as well, so Jesus said, "The Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost” (Luke 19:10). And as David demonstrates, it is always God who goes seeking after those who need salvation, those who are without hope, those who on their own have no way of finding life.

So we can go out sharing the gospel with confidence, knowing that God desires to use His word to reach out to a lost and dying world.
