Ephesians 1:4

Just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love.
Ephesians 1:4

Here we are told that before the world was created, God chose us to be his very own. We should be made holy and blameless based on a relationship of love. The fact that God chooses us is beyond our understanding. He has many to choose from, but we are told that not all are chosen. "So the last will be first, and the first last. For many are called, but few chosen." Some years back, there was an animated movie made called "Stuart Little." It is the story of how a married couple went to an orphanage to adopt a child. From the many to choose from, they chose, of all things, a little mouse named Stuart Little.

Like this couple, God came into the orphanage of this world through His Son, Jesus, to choose us out of it. We might be appalled to wonder why any couple would choose a mouse, but we might be amazed that God did not call mice in choosing us, but worms. David wrote in Psalm 22 "But I am a worm, and no man; A reproach of men, and despised by the people." We know that like the couple in the movie, God adopted us "having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will." Here we read the reason for God choosing us – it was His pleasure and will. Now is a good time to turn to the Father and thank Him for choosing you, knowing that His choice was not based on any intrinsic value in you, but was only the good pleasure of His will.
