John 1:12

But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believed in His name.
John 1:12

Are we all God's children? I have often heard that we are. This is said as a distraction, to justify some behavior, or to say that all roads lead to God. But the Bible never makes the claim that everyone is a child of God.

According to the Bible, you are not God's child unless God gives you the right to be. And you can only obtain that right by accepting Jesus as your Lord. In fact, Jesus told the religious rulers of the day, "If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I proceeded forth and came from God" and also, "You are of your father the devil" (John 8:42-44). According to Jesus, anyone who does not accept God's free gift of salvation is not a child of God, they are a child of the devil. It doesn't matter who you are, or what you've done; God loves you. "God demonstrates his own love for us in this; while we were still sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8).

But don't fool yourself. Unless you have received Jesus' free gift and confess Him as Lord (Romans 10:9), you're not God's kid.
