John 15:7-8

If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples.
John 15:7-8

These things Jesus spoke to His disciples the night before He was crucified. In His discourse to them that night, Jesus mentioned prayer at least five times. In John 14:13, Jesus taught two prerequisites for prayers to be answered: 1) Ask in Jesus' name and 2) Have God's glory as our motivation. Here, Jesus adds two more prerequisites: 3) if we abide in Him and 4) if His words abide in us.

Jesus had said before, "As the branch cannot bear the fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you unless you abide in Me." Abiding in Christ is having an authentic and intimate connection with Him. This goes beyond simple faith in Jesus; the devil believes in Jesus. To abide in Him is to love and cherish Jesus more than everything and everyone.

The fourth condition is "if My words abide in you." This speaks about an authentic and intimate connection with the Word of God. If we do not cherish the Word of God enough to read it, meditate on it, and obey it, we will not have a clue about how to pray or what to pray for.

In verse 8, Jesus underscores the importance of the second condition: By this is My Father glorified. And what should we pray for? Pray for much fruit. Fruitful Christians magnify the glory of God to the world.

So today, let us abide in Christ, abide in His Word, and pray for much fruit for the glory of God!
