John 15:4-5

Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.
John 15:4-5

Jesus spoke these words to His disciples just hours before He left them to bear His cross. In that hour, He told them to abide in Him. To emphasize His point, He mentions it 10 times in 10 verses, four times in the passage above.

To abide in Jesus means to dwell with Him continually or to continue to be present with Him. In just a few verses, Jesus expands on the concept by saying that if you keep His commandments, you will abide in His love. Then He says in verse 12, "This is my commandment that you love one another."

So abiding in Jesus is not a passive thing, but it is active. It involves loving and delighting in Him 24/7. It involves loving others in the strength that He supplies. Without Him, we can do nothing, Jesus said. Think about that. It is literally true. He is the one who keeps our heart beating and our lungs breathing. All things came into being by the word of His mouth, and in Him, all things are held together. Without Him, we can do nothing.

Jesus also said that if you continue to abide in Him, you will bear much fruit. Like the psalmist said, delighting in our Lord will make us like a luxurious green tree that bears fruit in its season without withering when the hot winds blow. This is the key to living a satisfying, fruitful life.
