John 15:18, 20

If the world hates you, you know it hated Me before it hated you...If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you.
John 15:18, 20

Jesus was very frank with His disciples as He spoke to them of a time where the quality of their faith and allegiance to Him would be sorely tested. They would all fail the first test by fleeing from the mob of soldiers after they came to arrest Jesus. Peter would fail His test of allegiance by being unable to stand up to a girl insisting he was with Jesus. But that was all before they were endued by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Our faith and loyalty to Jesus will likewise be tested and we have probably already failed in many ways just like the disciples. My problem is that I like being liked. I don't like to be hated by people. There is some evil lurking in my soul that longs for the esteem of others. But the time is coming, and now is, that we Christians will face not only hatred but active persecution.

The time to prepare for this is now, not later. Each of us must expect persecution and decide now to stand firm—to pray for the endurance to be faithful to our King. Know yourself and where your deepest loyalties lie, and pray.

Jesus said in John 16:2 that "the time is coming that whoever kills you will think that he offers God service." That time certainly is now.

Jesus has not left us defenseless, however. Powerful resources from heaven are available through prayer and by delighting in the Word of God.
