Obadiah 1:15

For the day of the Lord upon all the nations is near; As you have done, it shall be done to you; Your reprisal shall return upon your own head.
Obadiah 1:15

The book of Obadiah was largely a prophecy against Israel's cousin, Edom. The Edomites were descendants of Esau, the brother of Jacob and for many years the Edomites were not-so-friendly relatives. Multiple times throughout Israel's history, the Edomities opposed Israel and even rejoiced in some of Israel's worst moments. While the prophecy of God through Obadiah is concerning the future judgment of the Edomites for their treatment towards the nation of Israel, there is a God-given principle given that we see all throughout Scripture: "Whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them" (Matthew 7:12), "because you will reap what you sow" (Galatians 6:7).

The Edomites had plenty of opportunities to be gracious to Israel and show mercy to them when they could have really used it, but they instead chose to do the opposite. Let's face it, there are people we don't necessarily like very much in this world, but does that grant us the freedom to be harsh to them, to rejoice in their shortcomings, and even in their demise? I don't believe that reflects the heart of God, nor shall it reflect ours.

"Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy" (Matthew 5:7).
