1 John 4:10

In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
1 John 4:10

In high school, one of my teachers asked her students to write a paper explaining the meaning of love. Her point, she said later, was that it is very difficult to describe.

As a guy who did not yet know Jesus as his Savior, I found her to be correct. The word love meant different things to different people. "I love salsa. I also love my family. I love motorcycles. I also love my friends."

In this one verse, the depth, strength, and reality of love are made known. For the believer, it rings the truest chord in their soul. For the person who has not yet received Jesus as their Savior, it is just an intellectual philosophy.

What defines you and me as Christians is not only the fact that we love God, but it's the certainty that God first loved us, giving us the opportunity to be forgiven and redeemed through the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross. Our debt was paid in full. Sin's barrier between us and God was erased. Forever. Now that’s true love!
