Matthew 6:9

Hallowed be Your name.
Matthew 6:9

This is the first request in the Lord's Prayer, and it is the biggest. It is first by design because it is the most important. There is no greater need on the face of the earth than for everyone to realize how great and magnificent God is, and to hallow His name—value, honor, and respect His name—as He deserves.

This is what we need most, and this is what we should pray for first. As God said to Moses and Aaron: "By those who come near Me, I must be regarded as holy; and before all the people I must be glorified" (Leviticus 10:3).

"Hallowed be Your name" is not a statement or a command for us to do something. It is actually a third-person passive imperative—i.e. a request—that God would cause His name to be reverenced, honored, and hallowed. This should be our desire and yearning: for God to be given His proper place in our hearts, in our families, in our churches, and in our nation. This would revolutionize everything! This is what heaven will be like, and what we should pray for here and now.

God deserves all glory, and He deserves for His name to be held in highest regard by everyone. He made everything. He holds everything together by the word of His power. He weaved us in our mother’s womb, and He gave us life. He keeps our hearts beating and our lungs breathing. He causes the sun to shine on the evil and the good, and causes the rain to fall on the just and the unjust. And if all that was not enough to earn our reverence, He sent His son Jesus to pay for our sins, and redeem us and give us an eternal glorious home with Him forever. Hallowed be His Name!
