Ephesians 5:22-25

Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body. Therefore, just as the church is subject to Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything. Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her.
Ephesians 5:22-25

For a wedding gift, my parents gave my wife and me two gold coins. On the first is printed Ephesians 5:22-24; on the second, Ephesians 5:25-28. One day, I invited a friend from work and his new bride to dinner. As we were chatting before dinner, her attention was drawn to the coins. She picked up the Ephesians 5:22 coin, looked at it in horror, and shouted "Wives, submit to your husband!?" and threw the coin at me. This left a lasting impression on me, and a small impression in the wall behind me. I picked up the coin, put it back on the shelf, and then taking the Ephesians 5:25 coin in hand explained to her how a husband must love his wife. That a husband must sacrifice his very life if he is to love her as Christ loved the church. But I don't think my friend's wife heard me. She stormed out of our house and a few months later, she stormed out of her marriage.

The idea of submission has become foreign to our culture. So much so that the mention of a wife submitting to her husband can draw a violent reaction as if submitting to a man makes the woman less valuable. Nothing could be further from the truth. Submission takes faith.

Jesus submitted to the will of the Father. Jesus took on the role of the lowest servant when He washed the feet of the disciples. Jesus submitted all the way to the cross. Jesus' submission to the cross was a tender act of love. We know that He loves us, for while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us (Romans 5:8). It was this tender act of love that draws others to Him.

Willing to submit,

Pastor Rod Harris
