Matthew 6:11

Give us this day our daily bread.
Matthew 6:11

This is the fourth request in the Lord’s Prayer, and the first one that focuses on us. The first three requests are all about the greatest things in the big picture of hallowing God’s good name, His wonderful kingdom, and His good will. And next, we turn to the more mundane—but real—needs that we all have.

Jesus designed this prayer Himself, so it is a perfect prayer to address our deepest personal needs, the first of which is health and nourishment, spiritual and physical. We should note this is not a request for wants, but this is a request that the needs of my mind and body are satisfied in a manner that brings glory to God.

The phrase “this day” is the hint that this should be a daily entreaty, not an unplanned, occasional prayer. This request helps us see that God our Father is the one who sustains us physically and spiritually.

I also believe there is more here than just the physical need for daily provision. When tempted to turn stones into bread, Jesus quoted Deuteronomy 8:3, “Man does not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.” We need the daily provision from the Word of God every single day. So I suggest we pray not only for God to meet our physical needs but that He would also give us His word—the specific scriptural resource that we will need today. Ask Him to open our eyes to see Him in new ways in His word, exposing blind spots, and show us His precious and magnificent promises that we need today.

And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:19).
