Ephesians 4:29

Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.
Ephesians 4:29

You can usually tell which kingdom a person is from by their speech. You can pick out someone from England as soon as they open their mouth and the Texan is pretty easy to identify when you hear them as well.

That's exactly what Paul is talking about here as Paul continues with his list of things that shouldn't be found in our lives -- things of the "Old Man" that show what kingdom we formerly belonged to. Instead, how we communicate with others should show that we have put on the "New Man" and are now citizens of heaven.

The language of the kingdom of darkness is "corrupt", a word in the Greek that means "Rotten, putrid, worthless," but the person in the kingdom of light speaks words that "Edify or build up." Those who hear them have God's grace brought to them. We need to be mindful that our words have the ability to sicken those who hear them or to encourage and pour out grace on the hearer.

So as we fill our heart with the Word of God, out of our mouth will come the gracious words of our Lord, for Jesus said, "A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good… For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks."
