John 13:21

When Jesus had said these things, He was troubled in spirit, and testified and said, "Most assuredly, I say to you, one of you will betray Me."
John 13:21

There are many verses in the Bible that I like (John 3:16, Romans 6:23, Romans 8:1, etc.,). We share them with friends and anyone who will listen because they are encouraging. Then there is this verse. John writing this letter, roughly about 60 years after the resurrection, remembers this day. The night that Jesus would be betrayed. In John 13:18, Jesus was telling them about prophecy that spoke about His betrayal (Psalm 41:9). It would appear to me that they didn't connect the dots. He plainly tells them "one of you will betray Me." In Matthew 26:22, we read their response, "Lord, is it I?"

There are many things that can take the Lord's place. We see it all the time. People trading in their relationship for the spotlight or money. The encouraging part of this verse is it allows me to take a step back and look at my walk with the Lord. My prayer is we will not allow the things of this world to take His place, causing us to betray Him. That when people see us, they see Jesus. So that we aren't like the disciples, saying "Lord, is it I?" But so that we can hear the words "Well done, good and faithful servant."
