John 18:6

Now when He said to them, "I am He," they drew back and fell to the ground.
John 18:6

This verse comes during the time when Judas was betraying Jesus. Judas came with a group of soldiers and officers at night to arrest Jesus. Jesus asks them who are you seeking? Their response was Jesus of Nazareth (John 18:4-5). John describes what happens next when He responded: everyone fell to the ground.

Can you imagine the scene? A group of armed soldiers ready to take Jesus in and with a few words they hit the ground. In John 10, Jesus says that no one takes His life, but that He lays it down. Although there was a large army ready to take Him in, He makes a bold and clear statement. I'm going on my own free will. John wants to make sure you get that. Jesus is God and no one forced Him.

This is the God we serve. A God who could have said "no" at any moment, but still willingly went to the cross to die for you and me so that we may have life. No one forced Him, but because of love, He paid the price for us.

What an awesome God we serve!
