1 Samuel 27:1

And David said in his heart, "Now I shall perish someday by the hand of Saul. There is nothing better for me than that I should speedily escape to the land of the Philistines; and Saul will despair of me, to seek me anymore in any part of Israel. So I shall escape out of his hand."
1 Samuel 27:1

When David was chosen by the Lord to be the next king over Israel, replacing a rebellious and rejected Saul, Saul did not go quietly. So for seven-and-a-half years, his goal was to kill David. From 1 Samuel 16-through 31, David is running for his life. In our verse this morning, we find David five years into this seemingly endless trial feeling panic and depression. Though he had experienced God's deliverance time and again and had even twice let Saul escape when he could have killed him, for this moment, David sees no hope.

We, as believers, know and love the Lord and yet we too, even after years of having His hand upon us, can hit a wall of discouragement, fear, and faithfulness. For David, it would lead to 16 months of bad choices and many would be hurt in the process. Prayerfully, we can do better. Look back and remember His goodness, help, faithfulness, and love and lay your fears at His feet. It will save you months or years of grief.

Casting my care His way,

Pastor Jack Abeelen
